The Basics

Q: What's the cost of running an event on ohyay?
A: As ohyay is currently in beta, we are not charging for use of the platform. Feel free to create your space, freely use it, and share it with as many people as you'd like. If you are running a larger event (over 100 people) and need help designing or building a custom space, email us at [email protected] and we can connect you with one of the creators in our community who provide services like this at an hourly rate.

Q: What is an ohyay workspace?
A: A workspace is a set of rooms in ohyay, each of which can contain participants.

Q: What is the current capacity of an ohyay workspace?
A: The currency capacity of ohyay is about ~500 people per workspace, but you can spread more than 500 people across multiple workspaces.

Q: How many people can be on-screen in one room?
A: We recommend a max of ~20 people on-screen in one room at one time. When hosting lots of people on-screen, set the Participant Video Qualityof the room to Low or Very Low for best results.

Q: What's the largest event you've run to date?
A: Our largest event to date is a hackathon with ~1300 people over the course of a few days.


Q: How do I send my guests to the first room in my space?
A: Your VANITY URL will automatically direct your guests to the first room in your space. You can also navigate to the first room in the space and copy-paste the URL to send to guests to that room.

Q: How can I get my guests to join a specific room in ohyay?
A: Navigate to the room and copy its URL at the top of your screen. When you send your guests that URL (with a scene ID at the end), they should be able to navigate to that specific room.

Q: How do I give someone access to the backend of my space?
A: To grant someone access to edit your space:

  1. Click on Workspace in the menu and select Settings.
  2. In the first section of your settings in the right-hand panel, click on the pen icon next to Admins.
  3. Enter the email address of the person you'd like to grant access to.
  4. Click Save. Now, when that person enters your space, they should see a pen icon at the top of ohyay studio that they can click to switch into Creator Mode.

Q: Is there a limit on how many admins I can add to my space?
A: No, please feel free to add as many collaborators as you'd like. Keep in mind that anyone you add will be able to edit anything in your space, before and during your event.

Importing and Publishing Rooms

Q: How do I import pre-made rooms and workspaces?
A: To import pre-made rooms, built by our team and creator community, click on Room in the menu and select Import Room. To import entire workspaces, navigate to your ohyay homepage ( and click on Import under the workspace you'd like to import.

Q: Do I have to publish my space before hosting people in it?
A: No, you can host workspeople in your space as soon as you create it. If you would like to make your workspace or room publicly available, click on Workspace > Publish Workspace or Room > Publish Room in the menu.

Recording and Streaming

Q: Does ohyay support recording?
A: Yes. Click on Workspace in the menu and Start Recording to record multiple rooms (one at a time) in your space. You can ask the recording bot to follow you into different rooms or move it manually. Click on Room in the menu and Start Room Recording to record just one room. Click on Workspace > View Recordings to download your recordings.

Q: Is it possible to stream ohyay simultaneously to other platforms like YouTube?
A: Yes, we currently support streaming to any platform that supports RTMP (YouTube Live, Twitch, Facebook Live, Instagram Live). You can test this out via the Workspace > Start Recording menu item. In the pop-up, select Add Stream.


Q: I can't seem to get Spotify to work. Is it just YouTube playlists that work?
A: Yes. Currently, only publicly accessible YouTube URLs (or music files) will work on ohyay. Simply drop in your YouTube URL into the text box next to the pencil icon in the Live Music URL setting.


Q: How do I reduce the chances of my event crashing?
A: When you are hosting a lot of people in a room or workspace, it is often a good idea to set the Participant Video Quality of the room to Very Low.

Q: What are ohyay's bandwidth requirements from the client side?
A: It depends on how many participants are on screen at once. We recommend people have at least a 10Mbps downlink and 2.5Mbps uplink to have good multiparty conversations.


Q: Why can't I see myself on screen?
A: There are a few possible explanations:

  • There isn’t a video slot to host your stream. If you're in Creator Mode, add a video slot by clicking on the icon with a single person. Make sure it's positioned on-screen.
  • You’re meant to be an observer of the room. Sometimes events are intentionally configured so that only a few people appear on-screen.
  • Admin access was provided to a different email address than the one you’re logged in with. Try logging in with a different email.

Q: I am having issues with my audio and camera feed. What do I do?
